#404: Influencing Without Authority – An Essential Survival Skill for Project Managers
**An encore of this presentation is available on Tuesday, 14 May at 13:30 (Session #513).

Global organisations tend to utilise management structures that are heavily matrixed. This offers maximum flexibility for project delivery, but it also generates challenges for the project manager, who can no longer manage by control, but must manage by influence. At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
(1) apply techniques that will influence change in their own working environment;
(2) practice techniques that influence personal performance.

#406: Managing the Risks Caused by People in Your Organisation Striving to Excel
There is a bias in enterprise and operational risk management against addressing issues of human psychology. We submit that many organisations recognise the value of combining incentives and the fear of “losing out” on a reward in order to drive their customers’ actions, but do not use a similar level of sophistication when dealing with the behaviour of their employees, contractors and partner organisations. We will explore possible impacts and solutions using experiential use cases.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
(1) explain how many organisations may not properly incentivise risk reducing behaviour in their employees;
(2) describe possible ways to incentivise reduction of risk caused by human psychology, through both reward and fear of loss.

#510: Product Theatre: Beyond Outputs: Why Project Managers Need to Focus on Delivering Customer Outcomes
Whether you are running projects for internal customers or external clients, delivering the outcomes they seek is the one true indicator of a successfully managed project. The customer's perception is the project manager’s reality! Project managers often assume that the project output will deliver the outcomes it was supposed to do. Inspired by the many thousands of project teams we have supported, we believe that the most effective project managers and teams focus on the big picture and the outcomes that get delivered. In this presentation, we will explore the reasons why focusing on the outcomes of your projects is so important and share tangible ways you can start doing it in your projects.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
(1) assess if the way you manage projects is focusing on delivering outcomes and discover how to start tackling the problem in simple ways;
(2) discuss how to measure your project management’s impact in the context of your client’s outcomes and continue to improve its effectiveness.

#612: Strategic Analysis and Decision Making for Complex Projects
The complexity of a project leads to the existence of interdependent risks, which are hard to anticipate and keep under control. Organisations that adopt projects as a mean to achieving change and delivering results often find it difficult to prioritise projects and to make best use of their resources; additionally, many recent surveys have demonstrated that project backlog is a major issue in organisations. Portfolio management is a management approach that aims to align project efforts with the corporate strategy and optimise the efficient use of resources throughout the organisation. Managing the daily challenges of a project to complete objectives and meet client expectations is a challenge regardless of project size and complexity. Dealing with changing, and seemingly unreasonable, demands and requirements of the client often tests the ability of the project manager and project team to remain focused on the project deliverables. Project managers and teams must develop skills and techniques that will assist them in maintaining an effective working relationship with their clients and recognise behavior or situations that may lead to potential conflict, dissatisfaction or strained working relationships with clients. This programme focuses on the importance of establishing a collaborative environment, setting and managing expectations, and dealing with clients who create difficult working environments.

Mastering scope management is the key to effective project management. Although time, cost, and scope are the “Triple Constraints” of project management, for most projects cost and schedule are driven by the project scope. Yet scope is the fuzziest concept in project management. Time and cost are easy to understand because they're easy to quantify. Scope, on the other hand, is usually expressed in qualitative terms that leave room for interpretation and misunderstanding. Consequently, it’s often the biggest source of conflicts in a project. This seminar offers project managers the tools to master the challenge of scope management.

Business coaching has evolved from fad to fundamental. Having the ability to “coach and develop others” is a necessary skill for all project managers. However, with so much to do and so little guidance, how do project managers successfully stretch and develop others while getting the work done? Successful coaching is based on asking rather than telling, on challenging rather than giving directions and by holding a person accountable for results.

This seminar focuses on three major pillars of Portfolio Management.

Strategic initiatives are one of the newest tools in the strategic management toolkit. Organisations of all sizes and in all sectors use them to achieve stretch goals, transform organisations, and gain stakeholder commitment. Strategic initiatives are bold endeavors with large organisational scale and scope; thus, they are programmes and not “strategic projects.”
